New Irrigation System
Thinking about a new irrigation system for your new landscape? Be sure that your irrigation company not only looks at the landscape plan but checks out the property to gain knowledge of site conditions (slope, soil, etc.) as well as checking your static water pressure and flow rate. Failing to check all these things before installing a new irrigation system could result in an inefficient, water-hogging sprinkler system.

Irrigation System
Do you know how important backflow prevention is on your irrigation system? Think about it like this: you fertilize your lawn, plants, etc. This seeps into the ground and can get into your irrigation lines. So, without a device to prevent that water from "backflowing" into your drinking water, you could end up drinking fertilized water which wouldn't be good. If you have a system installed after 2005, the law in Georgia says you should have backflow prevention. Check to see that you do as many systems don't particularly those installed as part of a builder package.

Irrigation Winterization
So you don't think you need to winterize your irrigation system? At least do these couple of things, shut off the water. Run your system for about 30 sec to clear as much water as possible. Unplug your controller. You aren't fully protected as you would be with a professional winterization but it's better than nothing. If you don't have a separate shut off for your irrigation system, your system is really at risk in the winter because water remains in the pipe. Consider having a shutoff installed.

Irrigation Atlanta
It's been a while since I've blogged about this topic but it seems I need to do so again. About 5 years ago the state said you must install a backflow prevention device and rain sensor. Backflow prevention is super important for the safety of your family and the drinking water supply in general. This photos is of a double-check backflow device which is provides the best protection for your irrigation system and is testable. Many places south of Atlanta require these types of backflow devices and annual testing for your protection.

With the cooler temps we've seen of late, many of us are getting a taste of the beautiful Georgia fall that is coming. If you've never considered an irrigation maintenance agreement, there's no time like to present...like changing the oil in your car...it will give your irrigation system more longevity.
